Bristol Morris Men's Practice Night

I'm a member of Bristol Morris Men who meet every thursday in the gym at the Q.E.H.. So a movie of one of our dances seems like a good idea! The dance shown is "Pepper in the Brandy", this is our own creation in the style of Ascott Under Wychwood. Ascott is one of our main dance traditions - since the early 1980s. "Pepper" was recorded during practice night, Thursday December 14th 2006. Starting at the top of the set on the left of the set, the dancers are Grant, Jack, Richard, Neil, George and Joe. The musician playing the tabor pipe is Phil. If you want to find out more about our 600 year old tradition check out the Morris Ring.

Nicely done, John, thank you. Just a couple of things to correct, though. "Pepper" is not exactly our own creation, but the Ascott Highland Mary dance put to a new tune. I can date it to 1978 when I bought John Kirkpatrick's "Going Spare" album (about to be reissued) which features the song. I suggested it for a corner dance, but then-Squire Steve Bazire thought it better to use for the sidestep we've been dancing since then. We asked John K if he minded our using it in 1978, and he said no. Let's hope he doesn't change his mind and start claiming royalties now! We started performing Ascott dances late 1977, I think, not early 1980s.

Cheers,
